“Plus One” NCAA Football Playoff

In the pre-season there was the usual talk of Playoff vs. BCS in college football. You had your arguments both ways. A large playoff will likely never happen but the idea of a “Plus One” game is hard to argue with. The teams are sitting idle for the next month anyway.

Let’s play with the idea of this scenario. Using the BCS to determine the top four teams we will seed them as they were ranked. This still leaves too many teams out but we will go with it. The higher seeds host the games in the first round. What team wouldn’t want to the cash of an extra home game? This game can take place the week after the regular college football season still leaving the two title contenders the big layoff before the title game. The Championship game still lands in it’s original destination.

#4 @ #1

TINO Members voted this game 85% in favor of Oklahoma. No love for the #1 team in the country? Most of that could stem from the fact they don’t play a conference title game and sit back and watch as teams are bumped off. It’s not so much that they don’t win another game to prove themselves as it is that they don’t have to face the chance of losing a conference title game that others do. Not their fault, they are in the Big Ten. What is their fault is dropping a game to Illinois late in the season. They win that game and they get more respect here. I thought Lou Holtz was going to have a vein pop in his head as he expressed that Oklahoma deserved to be in the title game. They are the hot team beating up on #1 Missouri 38-17 in the Big 12 title game. Yeah, it was Missouri you say but they were #1 in the same system that now puts Ohio State #1. I have to lean with Lou here. I think that Oklahoma smashes OSU in the mouth in a way they didn’t get hit in the Big Ten this year.

TINO: Oklahoma wins 34-27

First off, I don’t think that Ohio State deserves to be in the National Championship because they play in a conference without a championship game and how do they continue to climb in the polls if they aren’t winning games. In this game I think it will be decently close, but Oklahoma is just plain old better than OSU. Ohio State needs to be ahead so they can run Beanie Wells and let him punish a defense, but I don’t see Oklahoma being down much in this game because of Bradford & Kelly. Playing at home gives OSU help, but not enough.

Now to VT @ LSU…

Shaping the BCS Title Game

The BCS title game is shaping up. There are actually quite a few left in the hunt going into this weekend. They say every week of the College Football season is a playoff, let’s see how this weekends playoff games look…

#1 11-1 vs. #9 10-2

This is where conference title games can go wrong. Right now Missouri sit perched at the top spot for the first time in 38 years but the Big 12 title game against Oklahoma looms for this weekend. OU won the first matchup earlier this season 41-31. Some say their experience is going to give them the win here and in fact the Sooners are favored by 3 points. Win and in Tigers…win and in! A win for OU can get them in the title game with some help.

#2 10-1 vs. 4-7

For West Virginia it’s “Win and in.” Standing in their way is a Pitt team that owns a 59-37-3 record in the series, although most of them are way back as WV has a 15-10-2 record since 1980 in the rivalry. Putting all that aside, WV is a 26.5 point favorite this weekend.

#3 11-1 vs. Big Ten that doesn’t have a title game that could push them forward.

While the other one loss teams are playing in their “playoff games” this weekend, OSU gets to sit on their Buckeyes and wait to see how it unfolds. See how another win in a conference Championship could help right now Big Ten? Could be a double edged sword here. If the Big Ten had a title game it could be enough to push Ohio State up in the polls. On the other hand, they may have to do nothing and slip into the National Championship.

Now some long shots…

BCS can bite themselves

If everything plays out right the BCS can bite themselves. If Hawaii can manage to beat Washington next weekend and Kansas gets past Missouri and wins the Big 12, there will be two teams left unbeaten. Wouldn’t that be tasty?

An argument against a playoff and for the BCS is that the whole season is a playoff. Now if both of these teams make it unbeaten and one is left out (Hawaii) it wouldn’t be the first time but it sure wouldn’t look right. Ok, your going to start with the “Who have they beaten?”-that is besides the point. I’m talking about their argument that the whole season is a playoff. If they keep leaving unbeaten teams out they should be able to use that argument. If you make the “Who have they beaten” argument Ohio State should not really be sitting where they are. Youngstown State, Akron, and Kent State are not real tough opponents and the Big Ten sucked BIG TIME this year.

LSU falling to Arkansas was a kick in the ass. Depending on the way the ball rolled the BCS had to hope for LSU vs. Ohio State. OSU still has a very good chance to land in the title game with some help. Chances are they will even make it in over Hawaii if Hawaii goes unbeaten. That really grinds my gears.

NCAA Salad tossed in a few hours

In a few short hours the NCAA football season was turned upside down. First came the loss of LSU to Kentucky, which should end their reign as the undisputed #1 team in college football. Triple overtime in Kentucky. WOW!

When the score of the LSU game was announced in Berkley, California there was an uproar. All Cal had to do was get past Oregon State and the top spot would be theirs. Then we seen an episode of “When Redshirt Freshman with the game in their hands Attack.”

I saw the field and I thought I could get around that guy,” Kevin Riley said. “It just didn’t happen.”

The Golden Bears were on their way to a tie to take the game to overtime (or a shot at winning) which would have made for an amazing comeback had they won. But with 14 seconds left the Bears ran one more play. It should have been endzone or throw it away but the kid thought he could run it fourteen yards on a very fast Oregon State D. Just like that, Cal’s possible bid for #1 came to an end. Can’t put it all on Riley, he doesn’t play defense and had a great game up until that play…but that is what will be remembered.

BTW, Kudos to the Versus Network on a VERY good game they were able to air in their first year dabbling in college football.

Not the best quality (neither was the play) but we have some video here…

So where does that leave us as the BCS rankings are on the way?
