First pick in the Blogger Mock Draft is…

So I’m up first in The Hazean’s Blogger Mock Draft. The way I see it is there are three guys in this position I can be looking at. Larry Johnson, Steven Jackson, and that Tomlinson kid on the west coast. My staff and I go through a very thorough process of determining who will and will not be on our draft board. When it comes to character we make Roger Goodell look like he is skipping to work whistling in a pink polo shirt.

First we flew to Kansas City to have a look at Larry Johnson. Johnson was picked first in many drafts last season and although he put up very good numbers he wasn’t the Superman I think many owners who took him #1 thought he would be. His stock appears to have taken a hit this offseason with even more loss on the O-Line.  You can look at the departure of Trent Green as a gain or a loss.  Carries…gain.  11 in the box…loss.

My first impression of Johnson is that he can’t be very tough. He had this thing for sucking on sweet pickles…you can be ripping a man’s arm off and feeding it to him and not look tough while sucking on a sweet pickle. Character is in question for us regarding remarks made by Johnson on Inside the NFL on how he did not give Dick Vermeil 100% that were considered by some as racist. It’s not a problem that I’m a white guy, but I’m very sensitive and he could make fun of me if I cry. Johnson is off the list.

We rented a car and headed east to St. Louis. The radio in Missouri sucks.

Steven Jackson had a breakout year in 2006 and is a clear #2 for us but can he be a #1 pick? I like his hair. Looks cool. Jackson won me a championship last season in an IDP Dynasty league so I have a soft spot for him. You can call it a man crush, I don’t care.

A problem we see for Jackson this year is the Rams shelled out some cash adding Drew Bennett and Randy McMichael. That does not mean that they are going to pass more but it sure does give them the opportunity to spread the ball around more.

Jackson has something we call the “Spunk Factor” and we like his Spunk. He has set goals to break Marshall Faulk’s records this year in St. Louis, apparently not paying attention to the transactions I mentioned above. Despite the spunk we are going to have to wait on Jackson to make him a number one pick.

We have heard some buzz on this Tomlinson guy in San Diego. Word is he is poised to have a breakout year. He can find the endzone and catch the ball. Two things we look at in a fantasy RB. Another is consistency….let’s have a look.

In 96 career regular season games LT has played in 95 of them. He has never got the ball less than 300 carries (only once less than 339) in a season…we like carries. He gets the ball in the air, he has 850 more career receiving yards than rushing yards. He has 46 TD’s in the last two years, we like that.

Some people are trying to knock Tomlinson down a peg or two because they lost their whole coaching staff in San Diego. SO? What do you do then? Give the ball to your stud until you figure it out. That Norv Turner guy has been known to know how to operate a running game as well.

In our talks with Tomlinson we discovered that he likes Snapple. We like Snapple. With the first pick in the Hazean’s Blogger Mock Draft, TINO Sports Page selects LaDainian Tomlinson.

*Yes, I could have just said LT because there is no question at all that he is the number one pick but that would be pretty boring for me, now wouldn’t it?

Excellent write up there. I guess I have to come up with something pretty clever when I pick

I see where this is headed. Great material and definitely a great selection. You had me believing that L.T would not be your first selection. I was totally sucked into this reading.

    Great Job!

At least you made it entertaining, knowing you had to go with LT, or, as he was dubbed in most of my leagues, Fantasy Jesus.

  4. Tino Says:

I had to…there wasn’t much mystery in who I had ot go with. I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of move I can make at 24 though.

Good stuff. Glad to see you didn’t just write LT for the obvious reasons and you went into detail witih other candidates.

With the trades and acquisitions made going into the draft, plus the bulk of the team that is carried over from last season, and the trades and draft picks made during the draft, it sure seems like the Pats are going to be the team to beat in the AFC this season, and perhaps in all of the NFL.

Considering the Pats were almost in the Superbowl last season with a pathetic receiving corps and that they’ve added very talented players into said receiving corps this season, barring some nasty injury(ies), they look to be the team to take it all.I say injury(ies) because I think they could survive an injury or two to some positions, but if they lost Brady they’d probably have a hard time recovering.

I wish I could say that the Redskins did well in the draft and/or in free agency but so many holes still exist that I’m not sure they’ll be significantly better than last season. I suppose on face they should be if they can keep their corners healthy. With Landry (argh, hard to type that name as a Redskin!!) back there with a healthy secondary they might be able to cheat up more and put more pressure on opposing QBs. Might.

They still have what should be a lot of talent in the receiving positions, and Campbell should be better, but they don’t have the quality on either line (offense or defense) that I wish they’d have, so it could be yet another year of .500 at best, or worse.

Still, the NFC East looks to be the NFC Least again this season. None of the teams there look like they’ll be that good, and none really look ready to step up and take the division.
